Student of the Month - Sheila Richards

The VSA MA Student of the Month initiative was launched to celebrate the accomplishments of students who have exhibited significant artistic, social or academic growth throughout their participation in the VSA MA residency program.  This month's student is Sheila Richards from the Adams Elementary School.

Sheila and her classmates participated in a 12-week artist residency program with VSA MA Teaching Artist Tim Van Egmond.  Through the program, students with autism and students in general education classrooms came together to learn through music and storytelling.  At the beginning of the program, she would hide in the corner of the room throughout the whole session.  She slowly started to show participation independently and became actively engaged for most of the session.  As her teacher, Gabriella explained "She is so excited when Mr.Tim comes to our class and has even showed this enthusiasm through physical responses such as hugging Mr.Tim when he comes in.  This shows tremendous growth, especially since the only person Sheila hugs in school in her classroom teacher that she has been working with for over a year!  She has shown amazing growth behaviorally, socially, and emotionally due to the VSA program.  Way to go Sheila!"

Sheila received her Student of the Month certificate and a book, "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds from Mr. Tim during a final performance at school.  Her family, teachers, classmates, principal and Mr. Tim are very proud of her accomplishments!  Congratulations Sheila!
