Access to Theatre Youth Perform at the Boston Center for the Arts

Access to Theatre (ATT), a program of Partners for Youth with Disabilities, in partnership with the Boston Center for the Arts (BCA), Until Tomorrow Productions, and VSA Massachusetts, will again take up residence at the Boston Center for the Arts this summer. During a three-week residency, ATT will work with an inclusive group of youth with and without disabilities to create an original production that will include improvisation, stories, dance/movement and music to share with the public on Friday, August 10th at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm, in the Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts, 539 Tremont Street in Boston’s South End.
This year Access to Theatre is able to offer the Summer Institute for 3 weeks, due to sponsorship provided by longtime collaborator, VSA Massachusetts.
Created by, with and for young people ages 13 to 24 with and without disabilities, ATT provides fully accessible participatory theater arts experiences, enabling youth to develop creative expression, self-esteem, friendship and leadership skills. Participants work with professional artists to stage and create original theater productions and interactive audience experiences.
Since partnering with the BCA in 1997, ATT has worked with over 875 young people in 47 original productions for 31,000 audience members. Through these programs, participants explore movement, dance, music, spoken word and the countless combinations that can be created in artistic experiences.
"What makes ATT unique is not the fact that it brings together youth with and without disabilities," says ATT Director Donna Folan. "The uniqueness comes from the diversity of the group and what can happen when everyone has an equal opportunity." She continues, "It's about creativity and how people choose to express themselves, not about who may or may not have a disability."
The ATT residency runs from Sunday, July 22nd to Friday, August 10th and culminates in the Cyclorama performance. The event is free and open to the public as well as wheelchair accessible, ASL interpreted and Audio Described. Donations are accepted.
