The Artist Services Team of the Kennedy Center's Department of VSA and Accessibility put together this list of notable opportunities in the visual and performing arts, for both emerging and established artists.
Visual Arts Opportunities
Exhibition: 50th Annual Juried Competition at Masur Museum of Art
Deadline: January 11, 2013
The Masur Museum of Art’s Annual Juried Competition showcases contemporary artists throughout the United States of America working in any medium. George T.M. Shackelford, Senior Deputy Director of the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, is the exhibit juror and a $1000 award will be given for Best in Show.
Exhibition: States of Mind at the University of Maryland's Stamp Gallery
Deadline: February 11, 2013
The University of Maryland presents a unique opportunity for practicing artists: This is not an exhibition emphasizing principles or output of therapeutic art; instead, we seek artists whose work sheds light on the depth of mental health. We hope a broad representation of ideas and interpretations on this theme will be submitted for review. All mediums will be considered. Please visit our mission page for more information about the gallery. A total of $1500 is available for artist honorariums. Both visual artists and poets alike are invited to apply.
Exhibition: Trash Talk at Target Gallery, Torpedo Factory Art Center

Trash Talk is an all-media exhibition featuring work made from recycled or found objects. Work may include new materials, but must be comprised of at least 50% of found/recycled materials. It is open to all artists nationally and internationally. Exhibit juror is Maren Hassinger, Director of the Rinehart School of Sculpture at Maryland Institute College of Art.
Exhibition: VSA Emerging Artists Program – Call for Art

A national juried exhibition of emerging artists, ages 16-25, with disabilities. In/finite Earth asks emerging artists to showcase work that illuminates innovative viewpoints at the intersection of environmentalism, creativity, and disability. This call for art asks artists to engage in the physical, emotional, and creative ties we share across our planet, and present their artistic perspectives regarding the natural world, sustainability, and our collective future. Fifteen artists will be selected for an exhibition in Fall 2013 and will share $60,000 in cash awards.
Exhibition: Northern Virginia Art Center

Northern Virginia Art Center is searching for talented professional artists with a cohesive body of work to exhibit in their new Special Exhibitions space in the heart of Crystal City's thriving restaurant district. 380 square feet of gleaming exhibition space available for monthly exhibits of 2D or 3D art! Their full time gallery staff will assist in exhibit installation, process sales of your work, and will coordinate your opening reception, all for a small fee and low sales commission.
Exhibition: 10th Annual Art show at the Virginia Center for Independent Living

The Virginia CIL is preparing for its 10th Annual Juried Arts and Crafts show which features the works of some of the area’s most talented artists with disabilities. This year’s show will be held on April 26 and 27, 2013. To apply, please email Gerald O'Neill, Executive Director with a bio, sample digital images of artwork, or link to artist website. There is no fee for first time participants and artists keep 100% of all sales generated.
Performing Arts Opportunities
Program: American Music Abroad

American Music Abroad is a partnership between the Association of American Voices and the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). The mission of the American Music Abroad program is to facilitate cultural exchange via musical performance and educational outreach. The ensembles selected will conduct regional cultural exchange tours in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Central and South America, and the Middle East for approximately one month. As part of your program activities, selected ensembles will conduct public concerts, lecture-demonstrations, workshops, jam sessions with local musicians and media outreach. The program is open to trios, quartets, and quintets.
Competition: The American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition 2013

The American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition 2013 is open to school students and adults of all nationalities and countries. All instruments, including piano, strings, voice and winds are welcome to participate in the Competition. Winner performs at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Competition: Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame: Jenny Greene, soprano w/piano duets

Vox Novus is calling for one-minute pieces composed for Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame: Jenny Greene, soprano w/piano to be performed Sunday, March 24, 2013 for the Composer's Voice concert series at the Jan Hus Church in New York City. The one-minute pieces are to be written specifically for this project, which will be performed by Jenny Greene and her piano accompanist. Jenny Greene's range is from middle C to Eb above high C. You are welcome to include coloratura, as well as longer lyrical vocal passages. Dramatic works and extended vocal techniques are strongly encouraged.
Competition: American Protégé International Concerto Competition 2013

International Concerto Competition 2013 is open to all instruments, including strings, piano, voice and winds. We invite school students and adults to participate in the Competition. There is no age limit for the adult participants. Winners will perform on Saturday, March 17, 2013 at 7:30 PM at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City. $1,000 Grand Cash Prize, $300 Scholarship, Judges' Distinction Award Trophy and other Special Awards may be granted based on the judges recommendations.
Residency: 2013 Dance Omi International Dance Collective

Professional dancers and choreographers of all disciplines who wish to collaborate with diverse, international dance artists of different backgrounds are encouraged to apply for this 3-week residency in beautiful upstate New York. Under the direction of Dance Omi Director Christopher K. Morgan and a Guest Mentor, a group of highly accomplished, diverse dance artists will experiment, create, and collaborate in a facilitated, supportive setting. All awarded fellows receive full room and board, but are responsible for their own travel funds. This year's residency will run August 6-26, 2013.
Competition: USA International Harp Competition

Founded in 1989 by world renowned harpist and teacher Susann McDonald, the USA International Harp Competition is held every three years. The Competition is hosted by the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and is open to harpists of all nationalities between the ages of 16 and 32. In addition to awarding outstanding prizes such as a Commemorative Lyon & Healy Gold Concert Grand Harp designed especially for the USA International Harp Competition, the Competition has an impressive record of helping launch young careers.
Competition: 3rd International Competition for Composers and Soloists “The Respighi Prize”

The Respighi Prize has been established to encourage and offer a performance opportunity for young talented composers and soloists through the inspiration of Ottorino Respighi’s music. Participants must be currently enrolled in (or recent graduates of) music conservatory or college, under 40 years of age. Winners will receive a Certificate Award as Winner of The Respighi Prize; World Premiere of composition (for composers) and performance as featured soloist with the Chamber Orchestra of New York; Recording of the concert, for archive and promotional use.

Residency: Artist-in-Residence at Acadia National Park

The Artist-in-Residence Program at Acadia National Park offers professional writers, composers, and all visual and performing artists the opportunity to pursue their particular art form while surrounded by the inspiring landscape of the park. In the spring and fall, the park provides housing to participants for two-week to four-week periods. No additional stipend is available. In return, participating artists are asked to donate to the park collection a piece of work representative of their style and their stay. These creative works will be displayed on a rotating schedule or shared with the public through other appropriate means during the upcoming seasons. Artists are also asked to participate in one public program per week of their residency such as demonstrations, talks, exploratory hikes, or performances.

WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival (now it’s 46th year!) continues with its totally dedicated Independent Film screening format for the upcoming April 12 - 21, 2013 unspooling at the flagship AMC Studio 30 Dunvale Theaters. WorldFest will screen just 55-60 feature film and 100 Short Film Premieres, with a complete and absolute emphasis on the American and International Independent feature films and with a continuing annual spotlight on an individual country and its films. WorldFest also offers competition in TV Production, Documentary, Corporate & Business Films, Student & Experimental, TV Commercials, Film & Video Production, Music Videos, New Media (Interactive & Web Sites) and unproduced Screenplays.
Residency: U.S./Japan Creative Artists' Program
Deadline: March 1, 2013
The U.S/Japan Creative Artists' Program provides support for up to five outstanding contemporary or traditional artists from the United States to spend a three-month residency in Japan. Eligible applicants are architects, choreographers, composers, creative writers, designers, media artists, playwrights, visual artists, or solo theater artists who work with original material (including puppeteers, storytellers and performance artists). Multidisciplinary artists and artistic directors of theater or dance companies are also eligible. Selected artists will receive a grant award in the amount of $20,000 to cover housing, living, and professional expenses for either 1 artist or a collaborative team and up to $2,000 for round trip transportation for the artist.
