    Julia Beck

Julia Beck, M.Ed Candidate, Harvard Graduate School of Education '13

    What are your favorite pastimes?
"Participating in theatre in any way, going to markets (especially ones with samples!) and going to South Haven, Michigan with my family."

If you could be a cartoon character, who would you be?
"Does Harry Potter count?  I would want to be Harry Potter."

You are trapped on an island.  What three items do you want to have with you?
"Okay, I'm going to resist the "I'd bring some means of getting off the island" path here ... I'd bring a really good book I can read over and over without getting bored, lots of sunscreen (I burn really easily...) and a friend."

Do you have any uncommon talents or quirks?
"You know, I really had to think about this one.  I can raise one eyebrow really well.  Other than that, I suppose I'm pretty ordinary."

    What brings you to VSA?
"I plan to dedicate my career to promoting access and inclusivity within the arts.  I have worked primarily with young people with autism in the past, bringing theatre into their classrooms or extra-curricular activities.  I'm currently getting my Masters in Education from Harvard in Arts in Education - and I was looking for a meaningful internship where I could be both an asset and a learner.  I am here to immerse myself in a company that shares my priorities and expand my knowledge of inclusive practice and cultural inclusion."

What are you doing during your internship?
"While I am here, I am going to be focusing on deepening VSA's engagement with social media platforms and honing their online communication strategy.  This is such a great organization - everyone should know about it and be part of the conversation.  I'll also be visiting with and learning from teaching artists working as part of the COOL Schools initiatives, documenting their practice and preserving it."
