The third annual ReelAbilities - Boston Disabilities Film Festival takes place this year January 30 - February 6, 2014. Highlights include:
Anita: Anita, a young woman with Down syndrome, gets separated from her mother after a bomb explodes at their Jewish Community Center in Buenos Aires. As she wanders the city searching for her mom – alone for the first time ever – she discovers an inner strength few could have expected. Feb. 5, 2014 7:00 p.m., Leventhal-Sidman Jewish Community Center, Newton.
Come As You Are: A quirky road movie about three young men with disabilities on a quest to lose their virginity. These buddies enjoy the finer things in life, including wine and song; the only thing missing is the touch of a women. Isolated by their disabilities and cared for by their parents at home, they convince their families they need to go to Spain on a "wine tour" but this is a cover for their true destination—a Spanish brothel that caters to men with disabilities. Feb. 3, 2014 7:00 p.m., West Newton Cinema.
Getting Up: After being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease and rendered almost completely paralyzed, graffiti artist TemptOne regains his creative voice through technology that reads the movement of his eyes and enables him to create art once again. Feb. 4, 2014 6:30 p.m., Cambridge Public Library.
Imagine: Ian, a specialist in spatial orientation, arrives to work at a school for the blind in Lisbon. Blind himself, he teaches his students to move around without using their canes, encouraging them to risk the unknown through the use of a complex network of sound cues. Among them is the beautiful Eva, who he attempts to bring out of her shyness and seclusion, leading toward a quiet romance. Feb. 2, 2014 11:00 a.m., Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Wampler's Ascent: Steve Wampler, needs to do 20,000 pull-ups to climb the famous El Capitan Mountain in Yosemite – only 2-6 inches at a time, due to his cerebral palsy. His wife and two children cheer him on from below, along with fans who have come to support his important mission. In 2002, Steve founded a camp for kids with disabilities, and his climb will be a testament to the idea that kids with disabilities can do anything which they set their minds. Wretches & Jabberers: Two men with autism–an accomplished artist and an activist–embark on a global quest to change attitudes about autism and intelligence. Tracy Thresher and Larry Bissonnette travel to Sri Lanka, Japan and Finland, dissecting, challenging, and reshaping public conceptions along the way. Jan. 30, 7:00 p.m., Emerson College, Boston.
