    Kyle Browne

I am a visual artist and educator.  As a teaching artist I use hands-on visual inquiry, imagination, collaboration and critiquing as a way to engage students more deeply in content, creativity and self-reflection.  I believe that by engaging in visual arts processes, ranging from drawing to sculpture and animation, learners can develop critical life skills as well as joy in the learning experience.  I am especially interested in the intersection of two (or more) disciplines to ignite creativity.  My experience with this practice includes working across disciplines, specifically in art, science, technology and nature in museums, at universities, in public school and out-of-school time programs for the past 10 years.  Currently, I also direct the Cambridge Creativity Commons, a program that serves youth and teachers in Cambridge to enrich learning through the arts.

My own art practice is a mix of site-specific research, drawing, animation, photography and sculpture.  Working across disciplines gives me the freedom to address conceptual concerns unlimited by material.  I have a strong pull to work outdoors, with attention to places of transformation, where nature and culture intersect.  This often leads me to other realms of reality where time is a myth and a story unfolds like a dreamscape.

For my COOL School residency I will be working with high schoolers at the Community Academy of Science and Health.  Our goal is to use visual art to address life skills, critical thinking, and communication.  We will be exploring various techniques such as collage, painting, and simple sculpture to provide a range of accessible practices for students.  Our goal is to build towards a collaborative project that can be displayed and celebrated in their school.  I hope the students will take pride in their work, as well as engage with each other in reflective and constructive ways that support individual and group goals.  I hope the teacher gathers ideas of how to integrate art into her everyday teaching and use the hands-on practice and outcome as a way to assess learning in her classroom.

I grew up north of Boston and have been painting and drawing for as long as I can remember.  My arts practice has taken me across the country and around the world, and it is the way I engage, discover, and understand my own inner and outer experiences.  Teaching is a way for me to share what I love and impart the joy of art-making to others.  It creates access to another world through imagination, curiosity and risk-taking.  I received an M.Ed in Community, Art & Education from Lesley University and am currently a candidate for an MFA in Arts Practice from the School of Visual Arts in NYC.  Please feel free to view my artwork at kylebrowne.com.  In addition the below links to my work on Vimeo:
